Atlanta Art Week Event:
“We The People” a Solo Exhibition by Julie Torres | Buckhead
Friday, October 6, 2023 | 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
About:
We The People will feature works by Atlanta-based artist Julie Torres. The show is a thought-provoking exploration of voices that have contributed to our collective story and ideals of democracy.
Through We The People, Julie Torres presents a powerful visual narrative that highlights the voices of Americans from all walks of life who have left an indelible mark on our society. The artworks serve as a testament to the diversity, resilience, and strength of the American people, fostering a deeper understanding of our shared history and the ongoing pursuit of democratic values. Torres’s iconic woven portraits skillfully interplay color, texture, and symbolism that inevitably invite deeper contemplation and dialogue about current politics, especially with the Presidential election on the horizon. Portraits of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Dolly Parton, and John Lewis will be showcased, to name a few.
About Julie Torres: Julie Miller Torres specializes in the mediums of printmaking and painting. She was born in Boise, Idaho, and raised in Tallahassee, Florida. A lawyer turned artist, Torres received her Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Florida in 2002 and 2005, respectively, her Master of Law from the University of Miami in 2008, and most recently in 2016, her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the Savannah College of Art and Design (“SCAD").
Torres' artwork explores the delicate balance between various systems: natural, artificial, societal, and legal. She uses fabric to create woven art depicting trail-blazing women in American history, national symbols, and cultural commentary. In July 2021, Torres’ work Super Diva! Was included in a group show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Selections from the Department of Drawing and Prints: Revolution, Resistance, and Activism.” It remains in the Museum’s permanent collection now.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. It is in private and public collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Delta Airlines, SCAD, Ritz Carlton, JW Marriott, Norwegian Cruise Lines, and the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. She shares a studio with her husband and artist, Alexi Torres, in Atlanta, Georgia.
