Antonio's lecture will be followed by a conversation with Professor Rodolfo Aquilar of the Latin American/Latino Studies & American Studies area of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department at Kennesaw State University.
This artist talk occurs as part of Atlanta Art Week and in collaboration with the Haitian Studies Association's 35th annual conference hosted by Morehouse College. The exhibition on view at the ZMA titled {UNDER}flow features works by Cruz and will be open to all attendees. This programming is free and open to the public.
About David Antonio Cruz: David Antonio Cruz explores the intersectionality of queerness and race through painting, sculpture, and performance. Focusing on queer, trans, and gender fluid communities of color, Cruz examines the violence perpetrated against their members, conveying his subjects both as specific individuals and as monumental signifiers for large and urgent systemic concerns. A recent series explores the notion of ‘chosen family’, the nonbiological bonds between queer people based in mutual support and love. Each painting depicts the likeness of the artist’s community, and at the same time the portraits strive to capture much more than the physical representation of the figures; they venerate the overall structure of queer relationships, captured through intimate moments of touch, strength, support, and celebration.
About Zuckerman Museum of Art: As a Carnegie-designated doctoral research institution [R2] and leader in innovative teaching and learning within the University System of Georgia, Kennesaw State University [KSU] offers more than 170 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees on two suburban Atlanta campuses. Its eleven colleges serve more than 42,000 students, establishing it as the second-largest university in the state. As a unit of the School of Art and Design and in alignment with Kennesaw State University’s mission of teaching, research, and service, the mission of the Zuckerman Museum of Art is to broaden the understanding and scope of contemporary art, theory, and practice in the Southeast. The ZMA encourages the exchange of ideas that inspire, educate, and cultivate an appreciation of the visual arts in our community; honors interdisciplinarity and inclusivity; and promotes receptivity to diverse cultural, social, and artistic practices and narratives. Since the opening of the museum in 2014, its intentionally collaborative environment has served as a vital academic and cultural resource center engaging multiple audiences and encouraging continued intellectual and artistic exchange, and experiential learning engagement. The museum was conceived by stakeholders as a means of bridging the university's approximately 7,000-piece permanent collection and thematic programming of its two expansive modern galleries to support and enhance our internal and external communities through accessible public programs, service activities, scholarly research, leadership, and collaborative cross-disciplinary curricular programming and partnerships. Thus, the museum seeks to exemplify how contemporary art and critical thinking impact experiences as a nexus within and beyond the perimeter of the university.
