Jackson Fine Art is delighted to announce the Fall 2024 exhibitions featuring Michael Stipe 'Even the birds gave pause' and a two-person show of Angela West and John Chiara 'In Conversation'. An opening reception is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 1 6-8 p.m. The exhibition runs through December 20, 2024.

'Even the birds gave pause' features work of artist and former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe and presents a sampling of the breadth of Stipe’s creativity - photographs of family and friends, an installation of folded portraits printed on delicate rice paper, brightly painted bronze fox sculptures, and book art portraits of his muses. For Stipe, these objects carry resonance that moves him emotionally. 'In Conversation' is an inspired pairing of John Chiara’s dreamy, richly colored camera obscura photographs with Angela West’s painterly mixed media works. Both West and Chiara play with reflection, light and abstraction to create deeply evocative landscapes that are less about depiction of place but rather the memory of it. Stipe, West and Chiara each embody a contemporary sensibility that addresses memory, identity, and the evolving relationship between people and nature.

Michael Stipe Biography Michael Stipe (American, born 1960) is a multifaceted artist, producer, and singer/songwriter whose career has spanned over four decades. Best known as the frontman of the legendary band R.E.M., Michael Stipe has sold over 100 million records worldwide and left an indelible mark on the music industry. Beyond his musical achievements, Michael Stipe has made significant contributions to the art world, focusing on cross-medium work that explores the intersections of video, soundscape, sculpture, and photographic and digital imagery.

Angela West (b. 1971) captures the delicate interplay between time, memory, and place in her evocative body of work. With a 25-year history at Jackson Fine Art, where she has been featured in six solo and six group exhibitions, Angela West is celebrated for her ability to navigate the intimate and communal aspects of life in the South. Her recent work merges photography and painting, reflecting a personal exploration of domesticity and its historical impact on women’s artistic expression. In each project, Angela West’s attention to life, landscape, and the passage of time conveys affection and unsentimental realism.
